LIMBO's puzzles take the form of a series of incredibly well-designed traps, many of which are all too easy to trigger inadvertently on first encounter. It takes no time to get used to moving the boy around, which is very important because the vast majority of the game's puzzles require precise timing to solve. The sheer variety of different puzzles quickly puts that concern to rest. LIMBO's protagonist (known only as "the boy") controls comfortably, though his suite of actions-run, jump, push, pull, and activate-might seem limited at first. The game's audio is also exquisitely subtle with location-appropriate ambient sounds and crisp effects helping construct a sense of foreboding and loneliness. Foreground and background art are displayed in soft-focus, lending an impressive sense of depth to the 2D platformer. Presented entirely in black, white, and shades of gray, the game uses light and shadow to create an oppressive-feeling dreamscape. While this may sound short, it's better for a game to leave us wanting more than to overstay its welcome. You'll be hooked the entire five to six hours it takes to reach the end. The game is very clever and eventually becomes quite challenging.

The developers describe Limbo as a trial-and-death game. But don't worry, the game avoids being frustrating. So what do you actually do in Limbo? Well, you die a lot. You work your way through the second half of the game conquering increasingly dastardly puzzles, and then the journey ends unexpectedly. But the lead up to it needed more of a climax. Limbo's final moment gave me chills - one of my favorite game endings ever. The puzzles become more interesting and complicated, but the absence of other life forms weakens our emotional connection with the game. Then the second half takes place in a deserted industrial area. In the first half of the game you encounter many interesting creatures and what appear to be other children (who are none too happy to see you).
